How dot product limits expressiveness and leads to sub-optimal solutions in Matrix Factorization?

Multi tool use
$begingroup$
I am reading one paper on Metric Factorization an it says:
"The dot product
adopted in matrix factorization based recommender models does
not satisfy the inequality property, which may limit their expressiveness and lead to sub-optimal solutions.".
What is meant by that sentence?
matrix-factorisation
