I watched this on VHS in the early 2000's, it looked like it was made in the 90's. The main character was a boy that dies and is reincarnated, I remember at one point as a dog. He is accompanied by a girl that I believe is a kami spirit. One scene has him floating in the afterlife towards a portal that will reincarnate him, and he tries to evade it so he can come back to life. It had a very heavy supernatural, buddhist/shinto vibe. At the end I think he was a baby.
