Dorcestria
Dorcestria sive Dorsetia (vulgo Dorset et interdum Dorsetshire) est comitatus Angliae australis; nomen habet ab urbe satis parva sed praeclara Durnovaria, iam temporibus Romanis nota.
Dorcestria (Anglosaxonice Dornsǣte, scilicet "qui circum Durnovariam incolunt") fuit regni Occidentalium Saxonum scira vel provincia, duce (ealdorman) praeposito. Ab anno 840 in Chronicis Anglosaxonum refertur; quo anno dux Aethelhelm ad Portuniam insulam properavit ut Vicingos debellaret, ibique iin proelio interfectus est.[1]
Pagi finitimi sunt Devonia occidente versa, Somersetia et Wiltonia ad septentrionem spectantes, Hantonia ad orientem. Litora Oceani Britannici meridianam partem comitatus confiniunt; sinus vel portus Poole ibi iacet urbsque Poole et suburbium Hamworthy unde naves cursum ad Franciam dirigunt. In ipso portu insulae reperiuntur quarum maxima est Brownsea. Ad litus oceanicus surgit etiam paeninsula (nominis insulae digna) Portunia. Locus huius comitatús excelsissimus est Lewesdon Hill.
Dorcestria enumeratur inter comitatus sollemnes Angliae hodiernae, additis etiam oppidis Christchurch et Highcliffe olim Hantoniae tributariis.
Dorcestria est etiam comitatus administrativus, retractis autem duabus urbibus satis magnis, scilicet Bournemouth et Poole, quae gubernia superiora in seipsis constituuntur. In Dorcestria "administrativa" hodierna manent urbs Durnovaria gubernii caput portusque Vimutium; oppida mediterranea Beaminster, Bere Regis, Blandford Forum, Cerne Abbas, Charminster, Corfe Castle, Cranborne, Gillingham, Maiden Newton, Milborne, Milton Abbas, Puddletown, Sceftonia, Sherborne, Stalbridge, Sturminster Newton, Tolpuddle, Verwood, Wareham, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Wimborne Minster, Winterborne Whitechurch, Wool, Yetminster; oppida iuxta oram maritimam iacentia Bridport, Charmouth, Christchurch, Fortuneswell, West Lulworth, insulae Portuniae, Highcliffe, Lyme Regis et Swanage.
