Series of short stories about an intelligent bear bred to fight an alien beast the size of a locomotive

5

I'm looking for a series of short stories about an intelligent bear (or species of such) bred to fight an alien beast the size of a locomotive. I recall only one story that featured a pack of bumbling, inept gangsters from Earth who of course underestimate "dat beah" and end up neatly in custody.

I believe that these were published in Analog magazine during the late sixties but it could have been Galaxy or F&SF, perhaps somewhat earlier.

The action as I recall took place on a colony world, not Earth.

    L. Sprague de Camp had a series of stories in ASF about an intelligent bear called Johnny Black. Probably not what you're looking for: about 3 decades too early (when ASF was still Astounding instead of Analog) and I don't recall one about fighting a big alien monster. Still, your description is vaguely reminiscent of one of the stories, "The Incorrigible", which you can read here: archive.org/details/…

The other intelligent bears I recall reading about were in Murray Leinster's Colonial Survey series, but I don't think that's what you're looking for either.

The title character of R. A. Lafferty's short story "Snuffles" is an intelligent alien bear. A great story but definitely not the one you were looking for. Then there's the one about spacefaring alien bears who land on earth but of course that's not it either. Hmm, there sure are a lot of super-bears in sci-fi.
