Somersetensis comitatus seu Somersetia (Anglice Somerset seu Somersetshire) est comitatus geographicus et traditionalis Angliae inter meridiem et occidentem spectans. Urbes continet Bathoniam et Wellas; caput autem comitatus, olim Somerton, hodie est Tantonia. Haec regio clara est ob siceram ibi a saeculo fere XII confectam et ob caseum, Cheddar ex oppido eiusdem nominis nuncupatum, quae praesertim e ruribus Wellarum, Glastoniae et Shepton Mallet circumiacentibus provenit.


Somersetia est comitatus historicus, et a principio regni Occidentalium Saxonum provincia. A medio saeculo IX in Chronicis Anglosaxonum refertur, nomine Anglosaxonico Sumorsæte.[1]. Pagi finitimi sunt Glocestria septentrione versa, Wiltonia ad orientem spectans, Dorcestria et Devonia ad meridiem. Ora maritima, ad manicam Bristoliensem iacens, occidentalem partem comitatus confinit. Urbs Bristolium interdum a geographos in Somersetia comprehenditur, interdum in Glocestria. Somersetia enumeratur inter comitatus sollemnes Angliae hodiernae, suburbiis meridionalibus Bristolii e territorio historico demptis (Bristolium enim comitatum sollemnem in se ipso constituit).

Somersetia est etiam comitatus administrativus, sed limitibus parvioribus. Separatim enim pagus Somersetia borealis gubernatur (oppida Weston-super-Mare, Portishead, Clevedon et Nailsea cum ruribus adiacentibus includens). Separatim et pagus Bathonia et Somersetia boreorientalis administratur cum urbe Bathonia oppidisque Keynsham, Midsomer Norton et Radstock. In Somersetia "administrativa" hodierna manent Tantonia (sedes gubernii); Wellae urbs parva; oppida iuxta oram maritimam iacentia Porlock, Minehead, Watchet cum Williton, Bruga Walteri, Burnham-on-Sea cum Highbridge; oppida mediterranea Axa, Bruton, Castle Cary, Chard, Cheddar, Crewkerne, Dulverton, Dunestorum castrum, Frome, Glastonia, Ilchester, Ilminster, Langport, Milborne Port, North Petherton, Shepton Mallet, Somerton, South Petherton, Street, Wellington, Wincanton, Wiveliscombe, Yeovil; oppida parviora fere trecenta et quinquaginta.


Inter fastigia huius comitatús excelsissima sunt Dunkery Beacon saltús Exmoor, Wills Neck collium Quantocks et Beacon Batch montium Mendipporum.

Nomen venit ab Anglosaxonico Sumorsǣte, quod est forma brevis Sumortūnsǣte nominis, id est "Sumortūnensium sedes". "Sumortūn" est nunc Somerton et Anglosaxonice "saeptum aestivum" vel "agri habitati [numquam nisi] in aestate" significat. Sententia comitatús hodierna est Sumorsaete ealle, quod Anglosaxonice "omnes Somersetenses" significat.
