Hantoniae situs inter comitatus geographicos regni Britanniarum


Hantoniensis comitatus vel Hantonia sive Hantescira (Anglice Hampshire vel brevius Hants) est comitatus Angliae meridionalis circiter 1 691 000 incolarum (anno 2006). Nomen habet ab urbe Hantonia iuxta oram maritimam posita; caput autem gubernii est Wintonia, quae in eodem loco stat ubi olim aedificata est urbs Romana Venta Belgarum.

Hantescira (Anglosaxonice Hamtunscir) fuit regni Occidentalium Saxonum scira vel provincia, duce (ealdorman) praeposito. Sub anno 757 in Chronicis Anglosaxonum notatur; quo anno regem Sigebryht, ex omnibus aliis regni partibus a concilio (witan) eiectum, Hantesciram breviter retinuisse, adiuvante duce Cumbra; eum regem ipsum mox necavisse et in Sussexiam effugisse; ibi mox a pastore quodam interfectum esse refertur, Cumbra ita post mortem vindicato.[1] Si hanc mythistoriam reiicimus, nomen provinciae Hantescirae rursus et saepius reperimus ab anno fere 860.[2]


Pagi finitimi sunt Dorcestria et Wiltonia occidente versae, Berceria ad septentrionem spectans, Surria et Sussexia ad orientem. Ora maritima, fretum sive Oceanum Britannicum adpropinquans, meridianam partem comitatus confinit; insulae autem ibi iacent, Vecta maxima, Portsea et Hayling multo minores. Hantonia enumeratur inter comitatus sollemnes Angliae hodiernae, insula Vecta retracta quae recentius in comitatum sollemnem erecta est; abscissis etiam oppidis Christchurch et Highcliffe (nuper in Dorcestriam receptis) necnon South Tidworth (in Wiltoniam).


Hantoniensis est etiam comitatus administrativus, retractis insuper duabus urbibus satis magnis, scilicet Hantonia et Portu Magno, quae gubernia superiora in seipsis constituuntur. In Hantoniensi comitatu "administrativo" hodierno manent urbs Wintonia; oppida mediterranea Aldershot, Alton, Andover, Basing, Basingstoke, Bishop's Waltham, Eastleigh, Farnborough, Fordingbridge, Kingsclere, New Milton, Novum Forum, Petersfield, Ringwood, Romsey, Selborne, Tadley, Whitchurch, Wickham, Yateley; oppida inter Hantoniam et Portum Magnum iacentia Botley, Emsworth, Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Lee-on-the-Solent, Titchfield, aliaque iuxta oram maritimam Beaulieu, Lymington, Totton. Alia oppida sunt: Stockbridge, Meonstoke, Mottisfont.


Locus huius comitatús excelsissimus est Pilot Hill; collis insulae Vectae excelsissimus est Bembridge Down.
