What does a “Gem of True Sight” do?

$begingroup$

GM awarded us a gem of true sight from a module called "The Priest, The Witch, and the Lost Temple". However, the DM said the adventure did not provide a description for the item.

What is the description for this magic item?

Could it be referring to a gem of seeing?

The gem of seeing does grant true sight.

According to the module's description and item list

"In my adventure The Priest, the Witch, and the Lost Temple, two new
magic items are featured: the Gem of Interdimensionality and the Orb
of Undeath."

Since it's not an item specific to the module, it may be a typo.

I'm a D&D newbie myself, so what I say might be wrong, but Gem of True Sight is an item in the popular Warcraft 3 scenario Defense of the Ancients (in the original Warcraft 3 it was known as Gem of True Seeing). It was inherited by its successor DotA2, and it is a very known item there as well.

Basically, it allows you to see invisible units and objects that are in your line of sight when carried.

Allows the Hero to detect hidden or invisible units in the Hero's line of sight when carried.

A common item found in all maps from Warcraft 3. It is dropped by most
weak creeps and can be bought from goblin merchants.
It detects hidden or concealed enemy units, revealing them and making them vulnerable.

I think it's not unthinkable that the creator of this DnD campaign had gotten inspiration from the Warcraft-universe.

I found a reference of the Gem of Seeing (which grants True Sight) in my 1995 edition of the AD&D 2nd edition (almost 10 years before DotA), and it's probably older than that. It's much more likely that DotA developers got inspiration from DnD while the OP's module is just referring to the original DnD core item (with a misname/typo) without any reference to DotA.

@zakinster: Yes, but OP specifically asks about "Gem of True Sight", which is literally an item in the WC-universe. It's very obvious that Blizzard used D&D as an inspiration for their game, same as a lot of other game developers. But the question here is the description of an item in this specific campaign, that seems to be inspired by the WC3 item. I don't really get how all these downvotes are deserved?

    $begingroup$
I didn't downvote but I know a lot of DnD players (including myself) always referred to the Gem of Seeing using incorrectly the term Gem of True Sight (well, because it's a Gem that grants the magical effect of True Sight) and this long before Warcraft 3 even exists. So saying that "Gem of True Sight" in a DnD campaign is a reference to Warcraft 3 seems a bit far-fetched. The downvotes are more likely just an expression of disagreement with the pertinence or conclusion of your answer, nothing more. Either way, we'll never for sure until we get an answer from the module author.

I didn't downvote but I know a lot of DnD players (including myself) always referred to the Gem of Seeing using incorrectly the term Gem of True Sight (well, because it's a Gem that grants the magical effect of True Sight) and this long before Warcraft 3 even exists. So saying that "Gem of True Sight" in a DnD campaign is a reference to Warcraft 3 seems a bit far-fetched. The downvotes are more likely just an expression of disagreement with the pertinence or conclusion of your answer, nothing more. Either way, we'll never for sure until we get an answer from the module author.
